What Harm Does Overcharging And Over-discharging Do To The Battery?

2025-05-09

The so-called overcharging, as the name suggests, means overcharging, that is, continuing to charge the battery after it is fully charged.

If you continue to charge to a certain extent after being fully charged, the gas produced by the decomposition of the electrolyte in the lithium-ion battery will cause the battery to swell and even smoke. In this case, the battery will not work properly. Just like a balloon, if you continue to inflate it after it is full, the balloon will burst sooner or later.

Some customers, for the sake of the beauty of their products, or to meet product mold design requirements, often only purchase batteries and design their own protective boards, which can easily lead to overcharging. On the one hand, because their battery professional level is not high, their experimental equipment is backward, and the designed overcharge protection parameters are inconsistent; on the other hand, because the quality of cells produced by different cell manufacturers is different, and the lithium materials used are also different, if They cannot judge and always use the same process to design overcharge protection parameters, which is prone to errors and leads to overcharge.

Over-discharge

The so-called over-discharge means that after the battery has discharged the internally stored power, and the voltage drops to a certain value, it continues to discharge, causing over-discharge. The discharge cut-off voltage is usually determined based on the discharge current, which is the critical voltage value to determine whether it is over-discharged. For 3.7V lithium batteries, 0.2C-2C discharge is generally set at 3.0V, and for discharges above 3C, such as 5C or 10C For discharge, set to 2.4V.

Battery over-discharge often brings catastrophic consequences to the battery, especially large-current over-discharge, or repeated over-discharge, which has a greater impact on the battery's electrical performance. This is just like a person losing three to five hundred milliliters of blood at a time. It will not affect the person's health, but once the blood loss is too much, the person's normal body functions cannot be maintained. If the amount reaches a certain level, the person will die. For batteries, over-discharge will increase the internal pressure of the battery and destroy the reversible function of the positive and negative active materials. Even if it is remedied by charging, it will be difficult to fully recover.
